TANGLED SKEIN OF DIPLOMACY
Conflict Between French
Leaders
NEW YORK, April 8
Discussing the Giraud-de Gaulle conflict, Mr Joseph C. Harsch in The Christian Science Monitor, says that official Washington decided long ago tliat General de Gaulle was an unsatisfactory person to work with. Mr Harsch explains that Washington grew restless at the. prospect of the Free French coming" under complete British influence and finally American policy crystallized at a point where it refused to consider any arrangement which would make de Gaulle the top figure. This position was communicated to Mr Eden, but it is not known whether Mr Eden agreed. Mr Harsch concludes: “There is more than meets the eye about the tangled skein of British, American and French policy. It seems that the Giraud-de Gaulle mystery will not be clarified before the end of the war.”
