YOUNG JOCKEY’S SUCCESS

K. E. WILSON’S WINS K. E. Wilson, the Invercargill apprentice, rode one winner and a second at the Westland meeting on Saturday. He was on Miss Waitarere, the outsider and winner of the Kanieri Hack Handicap, and he rode. Roman Son into second place in the Westland Hack Handicap. He has now ridden 13 winners this season. ■' Sale of Horses

The brood mares Steeton and Thornton are among the lot of horses owned by the late Mr J. L. Giikison to be sold at auction at Gore on the morning of the Gore races. The others are Nigger Mac, who shows promise as a jumper, the four-year-old unraced mare Luxett (Nigger Minstrel-Steeton), Melodist and others by Nigger Minstrel, Siegfried, Salmagundi and Man’s Pal. To Ride at Stratford

W. F. Ellis will be riding at Stratford on Saturday and will return to the south to take part in the Gore meeting next week. After tlie Gore meeting he will fulfil engagements at Oamaru, Waimate and Washdyke. Wyndham Nominations Nominations for the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting on March 20 close on March 5. Dunstan Direct

Dunstan Direct has raced well enough in recent outings to suggest that he may pick up a stake shortly. He is engaged at Gore. A. E. Ellis

A. E. Ellis may be absent from the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s meeting next week. There is a prospect that Kindergarten will compete in the Taranaki Stakes, in which case Ellis will go north to ride him. In at Gore

There is not a great deal of Sally Sage, but she knows how to gallop. She looks in good order for her' engagement at Gore. The Paladin mare Lady Adin is in good condition at present and she is sure to find favour in the race that is selected for her at Gore, comments The Otago Daily Times. Girl Friend, who showed speed in her race at Wingatul, has gone on the right way since then, and may be raced at Gore. She is from that brilliant mare Gold Boa. In New Interests Rawhamai has been leased from Mr A. C. Mills by Mr A. L. Power, of Christchurch, and will race in his new colours at Omoto on Saturday. He will remain in A. S. Ellis’s team.

An Overdue Win Miss Waitarere, ridden by K. E. Wilson, scored an overdue success at Hokitika on Saturday. She began smartly and led throughout, having too much in reserve for the topweight, Little Secret. Held on lease by three Greymouth enthusiasts, she is trained by J. A. Mclnroe at Omoto. She was formerly a member of V. Lee’s stable and had previously won on the track, paying, as on this occasion, a useful dividend. Fourtli Prizes

lire fourth horse received part of the stake in each race at Jhe New Brighton meeting.

Trotters Against Pacers It is seldom that trotters win races in open company nowadays, although some years ago they enjoyed a fair measure of success, and one, Reta Peter, twice won the New Zealand Cup. Moneyspider, Peter Swift, Whispering Willie, Escapade, and others all competed with success against the hoppled pacer. On Saturday, Lament, a high-grade trotter, started in the Beach Handicap at Addington, but so little support was accorded him on the totalizator that had he won he would have paid more than £l5O. He was the outsider in a field of 14. Carnarvon

Carnarvon is in steady work with a view to being raced at the Gore meeting. She, is never likely to reach the tighter classes, but is a useful sort for the minor circuit. Cabin Boy

Cabin Boy, who won at Gore on Boxing Day, is a five-year-old by Jack Potts from Sheila Fleetwood. He will make his next appearance at Gore and is sure to have a big following.

Parrish Gipsy Parrish Gipsy, a place-getter at Addington on Saturday, is an aged mare by Guy Parrish from an O.Y.M. mare. When owned by a Southland sportsman, Mr Eric Mitchell, she showed promise of developing into a first-class trotter. She is now trained by M. Holmes.

Big Totalizator Turnover The totalizator investments of £62,795 10/- at Addington on Saturday are easily a record for the New Brighton Club. The previous record was £42,346 handled by the totalizator at the meeting held at Addington in 1927 in honour of the visit of the King, then the Duke of York. Taranaki Stakes

After first forfeits were made for the twenty-ninth Taranaki Stakes, 24 horses remained in. Several of them obviously were left in by mistake, but among those remaining are Kindergarten, Kentucky, The Champ, Whackie, Clarice, Belle Fox, and Hippodrome. The best of the two-year-olds standing their ’ground is Expanse, the halfbrother to Defaulter. Though nothing definite is known about Kindergarten, officials of the Taranaki Jockey Club are confident that the champion will be on hand. The race, which is run under weight-for-age conditions (with penalties and allowances), over six furlongs, is scheduled for the second day of the Taranaki meeting, on Saturday, March 6. Keite-he

Keite-he, winner of the Juvenile Handicap at the Egmont meeting, is a chestnut gelding by Defoe from Lovecourt, by Gainscourt from Crimson Wings, by Warplane. Keite-he ran third in the Wanganui Debutant Stakes early in the spring, and had two other placed performances. Sun Chariot

Sun Chariot (by Hyperion out of Clarence, by Diligence), winner of the One Thousand Guineas, Oaks and St. Leger. is to be mated with Fairway’s son, Blue Peter, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby. Leased to the King

A National Stud yearling filly by Hyperion out of Thrust, by Fairway out of Sword Play (dam of Challenger II) has been leased to the King for her racing career, and will be trained by Fred Darling. The youngster is said to be of exceptional promise.

A Driver Fined Payment of dividends in the Trial Handicap at Addington on Saturday was held up for some time pending the hearing of an inquiry lodged by the stipendiary steward, Mr J. S. Shaw, against G. Cameron, driver of Sports Guide, for interference. Cameron was fined £2O for what is described as “careless interference,” but the judge’s piacings were allowed to stand.

M. Holmes Injured Dan’s Pride, driven by C. Isaacson, caused a lot of trouble when he broke up early in the race for the Belfast Handicap at Addington on Saturday, for, besides falling, he was responsible for bringing down Tenpennybit (E. J. Smith), Gay Lady (W. Milner), and Star Ace (M. Holmes). Smith was struck by another horse while he was on the ground and received a bad shaking, and Holmes was thrown from the sulky and fell heavily. He received concussion that is not regarded as serious, and he also received fresh injuries to a thigh, in which he received a charge of gunshot about two years ago. He was admitted to Lewisham Hospital. Exciting Finishes The finishes in the Trial Handicap and Autumn Handicap at Addington on Saturday were fine examples of sustained effort, excellent reinsmanship, and gameness of standard-bred horses, comments The Press. In the Trial Handicap, Sports Guide, who had lost ground at the start and had made a great run to the leaders, was challenged by Loyal King at the entrance to the straight, and the pair settled down to a Rattle royal. A furlong from home each *horse was being asked for its best and neither flinched in a gruelling race to the post. A dead heat after such an effort was the popular verdict, though the honours of the race were with Sports Guide. In the Autumn Handicap, Douglas McElwyn, who had made a mistake early, and Millisle settled down to a great race in the straight, and here again every effort was asked for and given. Only the judge was in a position to say which horse had won, and his verdict was a victory to Millisle by half a head. A dead heat in this race would also have been well received by a public that had been treated to a great display.

UNBEATEN RECORD PRESERVED

Win For N.Z.E.F. Rugby Team (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service) (Rec. 8 p.m.) CAIRO, February 22. The strongest Rugby side it was possible to muster from the Rest of Egypt, including 11 South Africans, was not good enough to shatter the unbeaten record of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. at Alexandria on Saturday. The New Zealanders, although not fully representative, won by 10 points to 3 against a stronger challenge than that of last year. After flashes of All Black form in the first half the game developed into a hard, uninspiring forward struggle, the brilliant New Zealand back line being starved of the ball. In set scrums New Zealand’s hooking failed, and they saw little of the ball against a veteran English professional hooker. The star New Zealand back was the All Black trialist, K. Welch (Wanganui), who played his best game in Egypt to date. He engineered a dazzling try,. The captain of the team, D. J. Parsons (South Canterbury) earned new honours on the defensive against rugged forwards. The wingers, C, F. Hart and W. P. McHugh (Canterbury), were the fastest men on the field and were capable of piling up p»oints, but lacked the opportunity. The first try was scored by T, E. Waddick from a fine opening by Welch. McHugh scored after a brilliant cut infield. Both tries were converted by H. W. Kenny, who was responsible for a good display. C. Wales and P. P. Donoghue (both of Wellington) and L. V. Pye (Manawatu),' were prominent forwards.

The Rest of Egypt secured a penalty goal. The New Zealand team was:—Kenny; Hart, Waddick, Welch; McHugh, L. R. Thomas; Parsons; D. Whillans, Wales, R. Newlands, Donoghue, Pye, J. Brankin, T. G. Fowler and J. Rainey. The reserves were the double All Black E. W. Tindill (Wellington), the Canterbury cricket star, M. P. Donnelly and the Maori All Black, P. Kutia and J. Snow.
