RATIONING OF CANNED FOODS
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, February 21. American family consumption of canned goods will be reduced by more than 50 per cent, as a result of ration point values. It is officially announced that sales of canned goods, which are at present frozen, will be resumed on a ration basis on March 1. Each individual will be allowed 48 points monthly, with which one small can each of peas, and tomatoes, and one medium can of peaches may be purchased. Typical point values, which are readjustable in accordance with available supplies, include tomatoes 24, carrots 21, peas 24, beans 15, peaches 21, and soups six, all medium sizes. Thirteen million cases of canned fruits and vegetables are available monthly for civilians compared with 30,000,000 monthly during 1941-42. Canned meat and fish have been frozen until the rationing of all meat products commences about March 28.
