TRAINING FOR HOME GUARD

Extension Next Month (Special) AUCKLAND, February 23. The New Zealand Herald’s military correspondent says that Home Guardsmen can expect to do 16 hours’ training a month as from the beginning of March. Over the past three months, training has been reduced to eight hours a month, the reduction from the normal 24 hours having been made as a summer measure.

An increase from eight to 16 would be consistent with the greater importance of the Home Guard, as a result of the expected reorganization of the home defence forces for the purpose of releasing a large number of men for essential industries. An outline of the reorganization scheme has yet to be made, but there are several indications, including the recent appointment of zone commanders, that the Home Guard’s place in the defence plan is going to be of even greater importance than it has been.
