AXIS DESERT DEFENCE
LONDON, September 30. Summarizing the situation in the Western Desert, a news agency correspondent says that minefields and wire—and in some cases a linked system of trenches—are stretched across the whole line of the enemy front at El Alamein from north to south. Field-Marshal Erwin Rommel’s forces are disposed almost exactly _ as they were a week ago and there is no indication that he proposes anything other than defensive dispositions. Allied aircraft continue to blast the enemy’s supplies by day and night. The Axis armoured forces remain in two groups, one in the north and one in the south.
