AWARDS FOR SOLDIERS

Distinguished Conduct (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 1. The following N.ZJE.F. awards are announced: — DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL.—Private Samuel Yates, N.Z.E.F., for distinguished conduct in the Western Desert during the second Libyan campaign in November. Private Yates was mentioned in dispatches (presumably for the same incident) in January while he was en route to New Zealand on a hospital ship as a result of being wounded in the desert on November 28. His wife is Mrs A. Yates, Kaitaia. Private Yates went overseas with the Wellington Battalion forming part of the 3rd Echelon and served in Greece and later in the Western Desert. MILITARY MEDAL.— Driver Oswald Martin, for conspicuous bravery in the Western Desert His mother is Mrs Lucy Martin, Pakatai, Whangarei. Driver Martin entered camp in March 1940 and sailed for the Middle East in December the same year with the 4th Reinforcements. He was then in the mechanical A.S.C., but since transferred to the reserve mechanical transport. In February of this year he was reported missing and a month later missing believed prisoner of war, but in April he was reported to be safe with his unit.
