SECOND BATTALION OF REGIMENT
Southland Scheme Not Practicable A detailed explanation of the reasons why fine authorities do not consider it practicable to form a second battalion of the Bouthland Regiment was received by the executive of the Southland Progress League last night from the Army area officer at I Invercargill (Major H. M. Hopper). The 'Minister of Defence has already informed the City Council, which supported the T regress League’s representations, that the suggestion could not be adopted. Major Hopper stated that the maintenance of the existing units at full strength, Was a sufficient strain on the man-power : resources at the present time. Also there 'Was the necessity of posting men, irrespective of the locality of their homes, to t emits in which their knowledge and train- : tng gained in civil occupations could be ■s post fully utilized. The pressure on man--1 jower necessitated the posting of men ■ \ cith any specialist qualifications to whate jver unit was most in need of them, irr tfepective of its location.
