HERD RECORDING BY WOMEN

Work Begins Today Herd-testing work for the season begins today for the women herd-recording officers in Southland. The shortage of petrol has resulted in the cars in which they travelled round their groups last year being replaced with horses and joggers, which have already been sent to the districts to which the women have been appointed. At a meeting in Invercargill yesterday morning, at which Mr J. C. Carbines, manager of the South Island Herd Improvement Association, presided, the appointments of the herd testers to the different groups were confirmed. This season there are to be eight women employed. They are: Miss Gladys Thomas (Otautau No. 1 Group), Miss Bessie Smith (Waimatuku No. 2), Miss Olive Sanderson (Waimatuku), Miss Joan Rose (Southern), Miss Ruth Mumford (Oteramika), Miss Daphne Browning (Otautau No. 2), Miss Ruby Herron (Edendaie No. 1), Miss Grace Hillis (Edendale No. 2). Some of the women are now beginning work for the third year.
