SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED

BALFOUR.—A large crowd attended a social and dance in the Balfour hall in honour of Able Seaman E. Nixon and Driver H. Williams, who were home on leave. During the evening the Balfour Home Guard formed a guard of honour through which the guests were piped on to the stage by Piper J. McLean. Mr E. W. Stevens was chairman and he presented the guests with a sum of money each on behalf of the people of the district. Mr P. W. McDonald, on behalf of the R.S.A., and Mr P. Nosslter also spoke. A presentation of a parcel of comforts was also made to the men by Miss Edna Davis on behalf of the women’s social committee. RIVERSDALE.— WhiIe on leave from camp Sapper J. K. Elder was met at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs J. Elder, Walpounamu, by pupils and former pupils of the Waipounamu Sunday School and presented with a writing outfit. Sapper Elder was also met by members of the Riversdale Presbyterian Church and presented with an envelope of notes. A presentation of a New Testament was also made by the Rev. Mr Thomson.
