PILLAGING OF CARGO
(Special Australian Correspondent, • N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 29. Cargo pillaging at wharves in Australian ports has become so serious that efforts are being made by shipping companies and importers to have more severe penalties imposed on ottenciers. It is also desired that the police be given increased facilities to search persons suspected of pillaging. Shipping companies in Sydney say they expect losses totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds this year through cargo pillaging on the waterfront rillaging is believed now to be the biggest criminal racket in Sydney. Statistics kept by shipping companies show that the average cost a ton ot cargo for pillage claims has risen from 2.26 d in 1938 to slightly more than a shilling. Goods which come under the rationing system are those most keenly sought by pillagers.
