NO MAJOR CHANGE AT STALINGRAD
NAZIS BRING UP CRACK DIVISIONS (United Press Association— Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.5 a.m.) LONDON, September 28. No major change in the fierce Battle for Stalingrad is reported, but it is known that the Germans are rushing up more crack divisions to take part in an intensified assault on the battered city. All reports from the front lay emphasis on the fury of the German attacks and the stubbornness of the Russian defence. In spite of the huge German losses their drive has lost none of its strength. The High Command’s tactics are now to try to cut across the city to the Volga river, which serves as the Russians’ main artery for reinforcements and supplies. The Germans’ way is barred by the crack Soviet Guards, who are holding their ground with rocklike determination. To the north-west of the city the Germans have lost heavily in repeated counter-attacks against the newly-established Russian positions. In the Terek river region of the Caucasus the Russians are stubbornly defending the road to the Grozny oilfields. The Germans now claim to have gained ground in the drive towards the Black Sea naval base of Tuapse.
