SOUTHLAND SOLDIERS Private G. W. Henderson, who is reported missing, is the only son of Mr and Mrs H. G. Henderson, Orepuki, and is 26 years of age. Before proceeding overseas with the 3rd Echelon he was employed in the Woodlands, Pahia and Orepuki dairy factories. He served in the recent campaign and was taken prisoner in Libya. He went missing while being transferred from one prison camp to another. Private Harold C. Smith, who has been reported wounded, is the only son of Mr and Mrs F. R. Smith, Arrowtown. He is 22 years of age. He was educated at the Spar Bush and Arrowtown primary schools and at the Gore High School, where he was captain of both the cricket and football teams. He was also well known as a tennis player. He enlisted with the Ist Echelon, but did not leave New Zealand until April 1941. Miss R. Norman, Mill Road, has received cabled advice that her brother, Private W. C. Norman, who was recently wounded, has been discharged from hospital. Mr and Mrs E. Condon, Thornbury, have received advice that their son, Bombardier J. C. Condon, has been wounded and received burns, but they are not serious. Private advice has been received by Mrs A. B. Crozier, Waikiwi, that her two sons, Sapper Basil T. Hansen and Private Edward Hansen, are safe and well. Mr and Mrs J. P. Smith, 9 Eye street, have received a cable from their son, John G. Smith, stating that he is safe and well. Advice has been received by Mrs J. Swale, Metzger street, that her son, Private V. A. Swale, is safe and well. AIR CASUALTIES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, September 28. The following Royal New Zealand Air Force casualties were announced tonight:— Ciunming, Flight-Sgt J. D. G., slightly injured on active service; father, Mr W. A. Cumming, Titnaru. Maguire, Pilot Officer J. A., slightly injured on active service; father, Mr P. J. Maguire, Milton. Newton, Sgt F. T., seriously ill; mother, Mrs A. Newton, Lake Waitakl. Purcivall, Flying Officer J. W. (D.F.C.), killed on active service; mother, Mrs J. W. Blanche, New Plymouth. The following casualties previously reported have been reclassified:— Doherty, Sgt K. H., of Otahuhu, removed from seriously ill list. Humphreys, Sgt R. G„ of Hokianga, previously reported missing, now prisoner of war. Odea, Pilot Officer R. J., of Hawera, removed from seriously ill list. Parnell, Pilot Officer S. D-, of Wellington, previously reported missing, now prisoner of war.
