DEFICIT REDUCED TO £7000

Patriotic Quota In Southland Tomorrow is the end of the financial year of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council. It was reported to the Publicity Committee yesterday that the deficit below the quota, which stood at £15,000 about a fortnight ago, had been reduced to £7OOO. Hopes were expressed that generous Southland citizens would take action to ensure that the province’s reputation for liberality should not be impaired. The chairman (Mr P. L. Hodge) said it was most important that all the district and women’s committees throughout the province should send in all funds on hand for the final balance at the end of the month. All committees should make an effort to secure the amount still short of the local quota. The patriotic workers should continue their efforts without any break and they should be particularly energetic in pressing the sale of comforts coupons. Mr Hodge emphasized that the remainder of the Southland quota for the financial year was required for prisoners of war and it was most important that the required amount should be raised. The secretary (Mr T. McKenzie) reported that a fair response had been received already to the envelope appeal to housholders. Some envelopes had been returned with contributions from the household, indicating that the suggestion of Mr D. W. Stalker that heads of households should encourage all members of families to contribute had been adopted. The chairman said all contributions to the envelope appeal received within the next two days would be credited to this year’s effort and householders should endeavour to assist by this means in reducing the deficit.
