RUGBY FOOTBALL SOUTH ISLAND WINS IN ARMY MATCH (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 27. The South V. North Island Army match was played at Lancaster Park on a fast ground and in fine weather. South won by 21 points to 12, but the result flatters the winning team which on many occasions was sorely pressed. Early in the game a misunderstanding between two North backs gave Argus a chance to pot a goal. Soon afterwards Paewai shot round the blind side of the scrum and passed to Argus who scored. Morgan converted. Argus again scored a few minutes later. North was frequently on attack in good passing rushes. Jury, McPhail and Donovan were prominent when one of these broke down. The South forwards dribbled through to Sherriffs who scored. At half-time South led by 15 points to 0. North was soon on the attack in the second spell and Mills, a fast breakaway forward, snapped up in the loose and scored for Passmore to convert. Fast work by the South forwards ended when Sherriffs dashed over near the corner. Splendid passing by Donnelly, Jury, McPhail and Donovan saw Donovan tackled in possession. He lost the ball, but McPhail scored. Trevathan kicked a penalty goal for South, but after loose play in North's territory Donovan potted a goal. South owed its victory to better packing and hunting by the forwards, but North was definitely superior in the backs. Donovan created a fine impression. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL AIR TRAINING CORPS MATCH The standard of play in the Association football match between squadrons representing Invercargill and Dunedin on Saturday was considerably handicapped by the heavy state of the ground and the unpleasant weather. Play in the first half of the game was not spectacular. S. Walker and T. Skelt, two of the most outstanding players on the field, both scored well early in the first half. A determined attack was made by Otago and Kennard for Invercargill cleared to Skelt, who passed to D. Wilson. Wilson dribbled down the line and goaled with a good shot. Paul, Langley and Bruhns scored for Dunedin shortly after. After averting several attacks by Otago, Invercargill rallied and attacked, and after defending the goal strenuously an Otago player accidentally knocked the ball into his own goal and the point went to Invercargill. The half-time score was 4-2 in Invercargill's favour. Play in the second half was much faster. Skelt scored ‘again and again and paved the way for many goals. Walker scored twice and goals were scored by Wilson and Snow. Nearing the end of the second half Invercargill was definitely superior and the game ended with the score, 9-3 in Invercargill’s favour. The teams were:—lnvercargill: N. Lilley, S. Walker, T. Skelt, G. Gould, N. Blrse, G. Cathcart, H. Taylor, C. Snow, D. Wilson, M. Woodsford, T. Kennard, S. Withlngton. Otago: C. Paul, C. Baumfield, L. M. Langley, H. Petrie, E. Hobbs, A. Howie, G. W. Bruhns. E. Renwick, I. M. Finlay, R. A. Mcllroy, R. Henderson. The referee was Mr G. Gunn. The team, accompanied by its manager, Mr L. Coughlans, left for Dunedin by the express last night.

GOLF QUEEN’S PARK CLUB A stableford handicap was played on Saturday at Queen's Park, the winner being J. D. Low with 33 points. S. A. Bell with equal points was beaten on the count back.
