Sporting DUNEDIN WINTER MEETING

INTERESTING WORK AT WINGATUI

Though most of the horses put against the watch at Wingatui on Tuesday made a good showing, one or two shaped much more Impressively. Whether or not it was one of her best mornings, Coy was beating Strip at the end of a five-furlong gallop in Imin 8 3-ssec, the last half in 54 3-ssec. Gay Lancer went with this pair, but was under pressure a furlong from home and dropped out. He likes much firmer going. Coy, though looking light in condition, seems to have sharpened again and if the distance in the Brighton Handicap Is not too far for her she should take a hand In the finish. Strip carried A E. Didham and Coy J. Sellars, so the former had considerably the worse of the weights. Compeer Compeer was going away from Taxpayer when concluding six furlongs in Imin 23sec. This six furlongs is about the best to date. Compeer, though he has not raced since January, will be more dangerous than is generally expected In the Brighton Handicap. This pair was to have been nominated for the Trentham meeting, but travelling two horses with only one attendant available was considered to be a heavy task, especially with a boat trip included in the journey. Auctor

Auctor led Attorney and Tissue all through a mile gallop and there was a gap of three lengths between them, in the order named, at the post. Auctor and Tissue were not ridden out. The latter, however, was not as keen on her work as on other mornings. Gold Nugget Gold Nugget had to be ridden right out to finish with Lord Midas over six furlongs in Imin 25sec. Raroa went with them, but finished about three lengths away. Lord Midas may prove a good outside bet in the Brighton Handicap. Kohara Kohara was going better than Miss Sally at the end of five furlongs in Imin 9 2-ssec. For Dunedin Anglo-French, Noko, True Range and Marquee, Southland horses with engagements at Wingatui on Saturday, were taken to Wingatui yesterday afternoon. Order Changed A change has been made in the order of running the card at the Dunedin winter meeting. The Brighton Handicap has been made the fourth race and will be followed by the Otago Steeplechase and Birthday Handicap. The Winter Handicap and the Aidworth Handicap remain the concluding events on the card. The alteration has been made because several horses are engaged in both the Brighton Handicap and the Aidworth Handicap. Bashful Lady All going well Bashful Lady will be a definite starter in the Winter Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday. Heidelberg For a maiden hurdler Heidelberg is likely to carry a lot of support in the Otago Hurdles on Saturday. He has shown much promise in his schooling. To Ride Valcron W. F. Ellis will ride Valcron in the Birthday Handicap on Saturday. Valcron finished on strongly in his winning effort at Oamaru and may run out a good 10 (2 furlongs. Other mounts for Ellis are Marquee, Gold Sequin and Bashful Lady. BASKETBALL DRAW Following is the draw for basketball matches to be played on Saturday:— First Grade.—Court 5, 3.30 p.m., Rata v.
