WORK ON WHARVES TO BE SPEEDED UP

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 8. As the war in the Pacific had developed the Waterfront Control Commission had found it necessary to take steps throughout the Dominion to increase mechanical and labour efficiency and increase the speed of passing goods through the sheds, said the chairman of the commission, Mr R. E. Price, today. In Auckland the labour force had been substantially increased, and from June 18 the supervision of labour would come directly under the control of the commission. Even the larger coastal ships would not be allowed to remain idle in port over week-ends wherever it was practical to work them. To avoid difficulties from cargo congestion in the wharf sheds, a committee would be appointed to see the sheds were cleared of cargo on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as well as on week days. Merchants would co-operate by a reduction in the multiplicity of marks on similar lines of cargo.
