CITY ELECTORAL ROLL CLOSED

In the expectation of a mayoral election on June 22, the city electors’ roll closed at 5 o’clock yesterday. A small number of residents of Invercargill took advantage of the opportunity to secure enrolment, but it is not expected that the additional names will be more than sufficient to balance those who have been struck off the roll since the last municipal election in May of last year. Including the supplementary list issued with the main roll last year, there were 18,500 electors in the city, that number showing an increase of more than 3000 on the previous total. It is believed that the 1941 list was the most complete for a number of years and no similar substantial increase is likely to occur at future elections as every endeavour will be made to keep the list as up-to-date as possible. Nominations for the mayoralty will close at noon tomorrow and the election will be held on Monday, June 22.
