BUILDING WITHOUT PERMIT

Sir,—A brother Guardsman is in trouble, and you, Mr Editor, in these times of paper shortage blare his “sins” to the skies. I carefully used that word “sins,” because our guardsman’s action is worth examining. Our brother has a car which he uses for Home Guard work when required and being a careful man he gathers some secondhand material and builds himself a shelter. He knows that the building controller will not grant him permission to use good materials in these days of stress. So he views his effort with justifiable pride. Then comes the blow. Our city fathers say: “Thou shalt not.” All our brother’s efforts have been in vain. He has built his shelter too close to the house and without the approval of our city fathers. I ask you, Mr Editor, what is our brother to do, for the final word came from the engineer: “The permit would not have been granted in any case.” GUARDSMAN.
