Mrs J. B. Scott and her children, Wellington, are the guests of Mrs T. M. Rankin, Yarrow street. Mrs H. C. Mackenzie, Swinton street, will return tonight from a visit to Christchurch. Mrs J. H. Drake, Ocean Beach, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs J. Kelly, Nightcaps. Miss Gloria Allan, Tay street, and Miss Roberta Colquhoun are the guests of Mrs R. Allan, Birchwood, for the week-end. Mrs. P. Creedy, Nightcaps, and her two small children have returned home after spending the school vacation with relations in Dunedin. Mrs C. R. Annison, with her son and daughter, has returned to Christchurch after visiting relations in Dunedin and Invercargill. Mrs W. S. Allan, Christchurch, who has been visiting Mrs C. A. Sutton, Waikaia, will return tomorrow night to stay with her mother, Mrs R. M. Strang, Lewis street. Members of the women’s miniature rifle club held another successful social evening during the week. Another will be held on Tuesday, when the hostess will be Mrs Lyall, Charles street. Mrs Gibson, wife of Flight-Lieuten-ant J. A. A. Gibson, D.F.C., has arrived in Auckland from London. Mrs Gibson is a sister of Mr George Formby, the English comedian. She is staying with her husband’s mother. Mrs H. W. Kirkby, who has been visiting her parents, Sir Robert and Lady Anderson, Victoria Park, will leave tomorrow on her return to Tauranga. She will be accompanied by her niece, Mrs P. Feltham. Miss Shirley Owen-Johnston, Dunedin, will arrive tomorrow night to stay with her parents Dr and Mrs A. Owen-Johnston, Wellesley Avenue. Her marriage to 2nd Lieutenant D. D. Lyness, N.Z.M.C., will take place on Thursday. The award of the Jessie Mackay Memorial Prize for poetry in 1941 was announced at the annual meeting of the P.E.N., New Zealand Centre. The award goes to Miss Paula Hangar, of Wellington. Specially commended are Mr Anton Vogt, Lower Hutt, and Miss Mary Stanley, Hamilton. Mrs W. Orr, Balfour, a Dominion vice-president of the W.D.F.U., has been appointed acting Dominion president. Mrs Orr is a past provincial president of the Southland branch, and with her long experience in W.D.F.U. affairs is well qualified to hold this important position.

OBITUARY MRS M. J. GODBY On Monday, Mrs Ada Arowhenua Godby, widow of Mr.-M. J. Godby, died in London in her eighty-second year. Mrs Godby was the only daughter of the late Mr George Rhodes, formerly of “The Levels,” Timaru. She was bom in England, but was brought to New Zealand when an infanl. Shortly after her marriage she went to England, and though she returned to the Dominion for a few years, most of her life was spent in England. She visited Christchurch several times within recent years. She is survived by two sons—Mr M. H. Godby, of Fendalton, Christchurch, and Mr Robert Godby, of London—and three daughters—Mrs Croft, Mrs Shorrock, and Miss Joan Godby—all of England. AUXILIARY NOTES The office at the W.W.S.A. rooms will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12.30 p.m. to 2.30 pm. Military drill will be held in the H. and H. garage on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Plunket aids are reminded that Nurse Mclntyre will give a practical demonstration of Plunket methods in St. Mary’s hall on Monday.

PATRIOTIC NOTES

A large consignment of shortbread and gingernuts has been received at the depot from Tussock Creek. An appeal is made to the women of Southland for more of these goods. Parcels of knitted goods have been received from South Invercargill A, Walaniwa, Central, Longbush, East Invercargill, Wyndham, North Invercargill, Ryal Bush, Walmahaka, Greenhills, Wallacetown, Edendale. Georgetown, South Invercargill B and Tussock Creek patriotic committees: Drummond, Ryal Bush and Fairfax branches of the W.D.F.U., and from Mrs Pickett and Mrs Dyer, Mossburn.

SUBCOMMITTEE NOTES SOUTH INVERCARGILL B: The monthly collection totalled £29/1/6. Wool is available for knitting from Mrs W. Carswell, Elies road south, also from Mrs Gough, Dalrymple street. GLADSTONE: The collectors will begin their rounds next week. The Lady Galway sewing guild is busy making husslfs. AVENAL: The monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. at the home of Mrs John Macdonald, Avenal street. The May collection is still in progress. Work is going forward with the hussifs and the committee is busy knitting mittens for the special appeal. GEORGETOWN: The members of the committee are still collecting. Thirty-three balaclavas, 15 scarves, 17 pairs of socks, and five pairs of mittens have been handed in this week, including a parcel from St. Peter’s ladies' knitting circle. NORTH INVERCARGILL: The proceeds from the shop day totalled £2B/12/3. There has been a good response to the appeal for knitters of mittens and the '•ecretary still ha- wool on hand. The soldiers’ relations’ afternoon will be held on Monday. The Girls’ Club members were hostesses at the Welcome Club on Tuesday last. SOUTH INVERCARGILL A: The treasurer wishes to thank collectors and those who gave so liberally to the May collection, which amounted to £22/17/-. CENTRAL: This committee wishes to thank “Knights of the Round Table” for a donation of 30/-, also the following for knitting comforts: Miss Hanan and her knitting circle, Mesdames J. Georgeson, Wesney and McDonald, and the Southland Technical College, Loraine Berti, Middle School and Girls’ High School pupils. RED CROSS NEWS Members are Invited to an afternoon arranged by the Invercargill Home Guard organization when a demonstration by the medical platoons will be held at the Automobile Association’s camping ground on Saturday, June 6, from 1 pan. to 4 p.m. The programme will be as follows:—1 p.m. to 2 p.m., display of equipment donated to the Invercargill Battalion of the Home Guard by the local Red Cross Society; 2 pan. to 3 p.m., demonstration of first aid by medical platoon of the Invercargill Battalion; 3 pan. to 4 p.m., discussion of coordination with hospital authorities, Red Cross Society, St. John Ambulance and E.P.S. organization. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Hokonui, forwarded a supply of jam during the week for soldier patients in hospital. This gift was greatly appreciated by the men. Notice is drawn to an advertisement in this issue about a first-aid class starting on Tuesday, June 2, at 7.15 p.m. Enrolments will take place from 7 p.m.

Georgetown Committee—The members of the committee wish to thank the Georgetown Bowling Club for a donation of £l/6/-. East Invercargill—The members will meet for sewing on Thursday. June 4, at 2.30 p.m. in the Mitchell street kindergarten. All are welcome.
