(Rec. 7 p.m.) ‘NEW YORK, May 28. Sam Snead led the way into the quarter-finals of the American professional golf championship, defeating Willie Goggin 9 and 8. The national open champion, Craig Wood, defeated Leland Gibson, 7 and 6; Jimmy Demaret (who in the first round eliminated the defending title-holder, Corporal Vic Ghezzi, 5 and 4), defeated Tom Harmon 3 and 2; Ben Hogan defeated Ky Laffoon 9 and 8; Ed. Dudley eliminated Tony Penna 4 and 2; Bryon Nelson beat Joe Kirkwood 2 and 1; and Jim Turnesa defeated Harold McSpadgen 1 up.
