TESTING DEFENCES (Rec. 2.10 a.m.) CALCUTTA, May 27. Japanese scouts are moving towards Chittagong. This is revealed by Lieu-tenant-General Sir Noel BeresfordPeirse, who commands the British troops in the Ganges Delta. “Small groups of Burmese, with Japanese officers, are thrusting across the frontier to test the Indian defences. Front-line troops are now garrisoning Chittagong.” AXIS SUBMARINES LOST OFF BRAZIL RIO DE JANEIRO, May 27. The sinking of the third submarine off Brazil with in nine days and the surrender of a fourth are reported today. A report from Port Aleza said the Italian submarine Palplona had surrendered at a north east port.
SOVIET OFFENSIVE NORTH OF KHARKOV
The Vichy radio stated that the Russians begun a violent offensive from Liptsy, 30 miles north of Kharkov, and have already reached the KharkovByelgorod railway. The action is apparently intended to relieve the pressure against the encircled Russian armies south of Kharkov.
