APPLICATIONS FOR TYRE PERMITS
The Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand has agreed to the proposal of the Commissioner of Transport that petrol advisory committees should deal with applications for tyre permits. This advice was contained in a letter received yesterday by. the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce from the Associated Chambers. A letter from the Commissioner of Transport on the tyre position was included. "It has been recommended by the special Tyre Advisory Committee dealing with the rationing of tyres that the petrol advisory committees should deal with applications for tyres,” stated the letter. Up to the present the rationing of tyres has been dealt with by the traffic inspectors attached to the Transport Department, but the commercial tyre position is now so serious that it is’ felt that some semi-judicial authority should be available to determine applications. This would ensure that the present limited supply of tyres is distributed to the best advantage."
