Mrs W. Pinckney, denary, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs J. M. Pears, Mossburn, is on a visit to Dunedin. Mrs T. Nicholson, Christchurch, is visiting Invercargill and is at her home in Herbert street. Mrs L. V. Bryant, Oamaru, who has been staying with her mother, Mrs T. Nicholson. Herbert street, has returned home. Mrs R. A. Evans, Tokanui, has returned from Auckland, where she was the guest of her aunt, Mrs J. Bell, Grafton road. Mrs H. G. Lynch, Albert street, has returned from a visit to Etalvale where she was the guest of her father, Mr J. L. Pears. At the Southland Women’s Club a spinning circle was formed yesterday afternoon from a group which has been in existence for some time. Members of the circle will meet once a week to spin wool for sea boot stockings and pullovers for men on minesweepers. The club has one converted machine and other members bring their own wheels. The chairman is Mrs Walter Jones and the secretary is Miss Margaret Crawford.

The play-reading and music circles of St. Catherine’s Ex-Pupils’ Association held their first evening of the season at the college last evening. The one-act play, "Hullabaloo,” by Philip Johnson, was read by the following cast: Janet Colyngham, Moira McGrath; Melanie Colyngham, Edna Crowe; Lady Headland, Betty Grace; Mrs Gosling, Audrey Hallamore; Iris, Pat Keppel; Ivy, Vera Dale; Ella, Julie Deegan; chorus, Doreen Deegan. The one-act play, "The Mere Man,” by Herbert Swears, had the following cast: The president, Erin Ferry; Lady Betty, Eileen Scully; Dolly, Joan Lynch; Maisle, Mary Maloney; Irene, Rosalia Chiaroni; Miss Goodsby, Doreen Deegan; the Hon. Mrs Rickerby, Pat Canty; chorus, Margery Fitzgerald. Items were given by the glee party, Miss Marie Winders, Miss Isabel Deegan and Miss Rachael Shepherd. The conveners were Misses Rose Shepherd and Margery Fitzgerald, and the accompanist was Miss Marie Searle.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

SOUTHERN SOUTHLAND FEDERATION

Sixteen delegates, representing 381 members, attended the annual council meeting of the Southern Southland Federation of Women's Institutes yesterday. Mrs D. Mulvey presided. The annual report stated that the knitting campaign for men in the merchant navy, inaugurated by the Dominion president, Miss Amy King, was progressing successfully. It was hoped that the institutes would continue to support this work. Several group travel parties had been welcomed to Southland, but unfortunately this scheme had been suspended for the duration of the war. The sum of £l9 had been collected on the signature quilt and forwarded to Wellington. During the year Mrs S. Bowman and Mrs D. Mulvey visited the school of method at Oamaru. Congratulations were extended to Mrs Mulvey on her appointment as Dominion organizer. In her presidential address Mrs Mulvey stressed the fact that now was the time to work for peace so that when victory did come we would all be prepared to carry on the building, of the nation. The election of office-bearers resulted: — President, Mrs J’ W. Martin; vice-president, Mrs S. Bowman; secretary and treasurer, Mrs J. H. Nicol; executive, Mesdames S. Bowman (Ohai), Ewart (Waianiwa), D. Mulvey (Clifton), J. H. Nicol (Bluff), J. Young (Waianiwa) and V. Jordan (Woodend). After the meeting Mrs W. S. Robbie, lady superintendent of the Central Nursing Division, gave a talk on first aid in an emergency and gave a demonstration of bandaging.
