AMERICAN DESTROYER TORPEDOED
(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 26.
A United States Navy Department communique states that in the Caribbean area the U.S.S. Blakeley, a World War class destroyer, has been struck by an enemy torpedo. She reached port with 10 members of the crew missing and six injured. The St. Lucia correspondent of the Associated Press reports that the submarine that attacked the Blakeley operated within French territorial waters off Martinique, which the Blakeley was patrolling when she was attacked.
