OFFENCES BY U.S. SOLDIERS

TRIAL BY MILITARY COURT (Rec. 2.10 a-m.) CANBERRA, May 27. Members of the United States forces in Australia arrested or detained for offences against the Commonwealth or State may in future be tried by their own military court and shall cease to be subject to the jurisdiction of the criminal courts of Australia. This was announced in the House of Representatives today by the Prime Minister, Mr J. Curtin, who said a regulation to amend the Allies Forces Act to permit this to be done had been gazetted.

The position will thus be that when any member of the United States forces is arrested, notification will be given to the officer in command of United States units nearest to the place of the man’s arrest and if required he will be handed over to that authority to be dealt with according to United States law and custom.
