CABLE REMOVED FROM DEFENCE POST
EXTRAORDINARY ACT OF THEFT An extraordinary action which might rank as common theft, but which in time of emergency would be described as sabotage or fifth column work, was discovered by the Lines oft Communication Section during training yesterday. In beach areas, watching posts and signalling stations have been established by the Home Guard for training and defence purposes. At one of these posts, which had been wired for telephone communication with the next station at the rear, it was found that about 30 yards of underground cable and all its connections had been torn out and removed. The laying of tlie cable had involved a considerable amount of hard work and technical skill on the part of the section, and its removal caused great annoyance to the enthusiasts who had devoted long hours of leisure to defence work. The theft shows a callous disregard by individuals for the security of the country. The class of cable required for the purpose is difficult to obtain at present and its replacement will not be a simple matter.
