WORK APPRECIATED

DEPUTY-SUPERINTENDENT OF FIRE BRIGADE Deputy-Superintendent R. A. Robertson, of the Invercargill Fire Brigade, who is retiring from the brigade to live north of Auckland, was met at the fire station on Saturday morning and received a presentation from the board and various organizations with which he was associated. Mr W. G. Tait, chairman of the Fire Board, who presided, spoke of the good work Mr Robertson had done for the Invercargill brigade since he joined it in 1926. Mr Robertson had come from Wellington, where he had joined the brigade in 1904. At different periods he had acted as deputy-superintendent there and altogether - had had 38 years of service with fire brigades. Mr Tait referred to the help Mr Robertson had given him since he joined the board. Mr C. G. Pilcher, a foundation member of the board, spoke of the efficiency the brigade had attained under Mr Robertson. Messrs W. A. Oil, D. Harris, R. N..

Todd, A. Sharp and L. S. Graham also praised Mr Robertson’s work. Mr A. Jordan and Mr A. H. Smith spoke of the time Mr Robertson had devoted to training members of the E.P.S. Miss G. Ferguson, on behalf of the women members of the E.P.S., also thanked Mr Robertson for his interest in them. Mr R. Weston spoke on behalf of the Sea Scouts and Mr J. Philp, the new superintendent, referred to the help Mr Robertson had given him when He took over the brigade. Mr Robertson, in reply, mentioned his happy associations with the board and made interesting remarks of the early fire-fighting days in Wellington when horse-drawn and hand-drawn vehicles were in use.
