TEACHERS CALLED FOR SERVICE

ARMY HAS FIRST CALL At a meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday a letter was received from the Army Reserve TransI port stating that two of the board’s i teachers were members of the transport I company and that it would be necesI sary for these men to take up their i military positions immediately the I company was mobilized. i A member stated that the Education : Department had laid down that a I teacher’s first consideration in an emergency should be for the children under his control. Mr W. Bell, acting chairman, explained that the two teachers were in the Army, which had the first call. They had enlisted in the Army and could not be held at the schools. He was satisfied that the teachers were quite willing to do all they could for the children. The matter was left with the secretary, Mr H. T. Thompson, to arrange with the head masters of the respective schools. A letter was. received from the department stating that as teachers who had received one month’s notice were on leave without pay, they were entitled to holiday pay earned by them up to the date on which the month’s leave expired. The regulations ceased to apply when the teacher “accepted” service with the armed forces. If a teacher to whom the conscientious objector regulations applied was in a war position the board should act in accordance with the following rules: (a) If he were a primary school teacher, the war position terminated and he was granted leave without pay from his permanent position or supernumerary assistantship, as the case might be. (b) If he were the holder of a permanent position in a secondary school,- technical or combined school, the war position terminated and he was granted leave without pay from his permanent position, (c) If h'' we’-e a relieving teacher in a secondary, technical or combined school his service terminated altogether unless he were certificated, and consequently was eligible for appointment to a nominal supernumerary assistantship in the primary service.
