JAPANESE PLANES OVER DARWIN

AUSTRALIAN AIR RAID ON RABAUL

(Rec. 12.50 a.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 26. Enemy aircraft made a reconnaissance flight over the Darwin area about noon today. The planes flew at a great height, but no bombs were dropped. This announcement is contained in an R.A.A.F. communique released by the Minister of Air tonight. It also stated that last night during a violent electrical storm Australian aircraft raided Rabaul. Conditions were extremely bad with turbulent winds and pouring rain. Bombs were dropped on enemy occupied aerodromes, which were damaged and set on fire. At least two grounded aircraft were destroyed. Anti-aircraft fire was encountered and one enemy fighter appeared, but was driven off. Fires were observed burning fiercely from a long distance. The Australians returned safely to their base.
