MATAURA NEWS

BOROUGH COUNCIL It was pointed out by Cr L. McKelvie at a meeting of the Mataura Borough Council that public support had been given the rest room project over a long period and he considered that the council should be proud to take over its management. The room was used for public meetings and the council had a duty to those people who had worked for the erection of the room. Cr McKelvie moved, in accordance with, notice given, that the council take over the rest room from March 31. The motion was carried. The librarian (Mrs H. G. Walsh) reported that during the month ended January 19, 2790 books had been issued, 2171 of which had been fiction and 620 non-fiction. The number of borrowers was 384.

In his report to the council the sanitary inspector stated that he understood that difficulty was being experienced in carrying out drainage work in the streets due to staff shortage, and and he recommended reverting to the method in most towns, where the plumber installed the whole drainage from the sewer to the house, including the work on the street.
