PATRIOTIC WORK IN SOUTHLAND
AMOUNT REQUIRED THIS YEAR “How much have we got and how much are we to find? Let us know what we are to do. I’m sure the majority of the public do not know the position,” said Mr C. Campbell at a meeting of the Invercargill Metropolitan Patriotic Committee last night. “The public should know,” said Mr Campbell, “what we are doing and the amount we have to find for every patriotic purpose.” The chairman (Mr W. Grieve) explained that the Provincial Council was called on to provide for the 12 months ending September 30, 1942, the sum of £20,556 for general purposes and about £3500 for the sick and wounded fund, making a total of about £24,000. To date £6713 of this amount had already been sent forward. MORE DIRECT GIVING
The forthcoming period would be one in which he thought there would be more direct giving, said the secretary (Mr L. S. Alsweiler). The petrol restrictions had made the position very difficult for any functions and these would undoubtedly be far fewer in the future.
Mr P. L. Hodge: The period ahead of us is going to be difficult with the number of men being called up. Mr Grieve: I think we should concentrate on asking the public for direct giving in view of the times. It was suggested by Mrs J. Hargest that there should be more patriotic broadcast talks in the coming year. The chairman said he thought there would be little difficulty about that. It was decided to recommend to the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council that details of the required total sum for patriotic purposes be published and that progress reports be made from time to time in order to keep the public conversant with the financial position for the current year. During the meeting women members of the committee reported on their activities. Mr Hodge also reported on entertainments held for patriotic purposes.
