SOUTHLAND FAMILY’S DISTINCTION
SON AND DAUGHTER WIN SCHOLARSHIPS
An unusual honour was won by a Southland family when it was announced yesterday that Ngaire D. Head, a pupil of the Southland Girls’ High School, had been awarded a university national scholarship. The occasion is unusual in the scholastic world because Miss Head, who was dux of her school last year, was the second member of the family to win a New Zealand University entrance scholarship. In 1935 her brother, Malcolm R. Head, won a junior university scholarship. If such a success has come to a New Zealand family before, then it has certainly been a very rare event. The father of this talented family is Mr A. W. Head, superintendent of the Awarua wireless station. Entrance scholarships are competed for annually by students who have matriculated at the various high schools. As only 30 scholarships are awarded, the winning of one of them is an academic distinction.
Mr Malcolm Head went to Canterbury University College in 1936. He was a New Zealand senior scholar and graduated B.E. (Meeh.) with honours. He was appointed to the engineering staff of the Dunedin City Corporation and later accepted a position on the executive staff of the engineering branch of Cadbury, Fry, Hudson, Ltd., Dunedin. He volunteered for service with the R.N.Z.A.F. and went overseas as a pilot last year.
