BABY’S BODY FOUND

MAORI WOMAN CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER

(P.A.) WHANGAREI, January 21. A Maori woman, Erina Paul, aged 20, yesterday pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter of a newly-born infant on December 31. The evidence showed that the accused gave birth to a child on the foreshore of Whangarei harbour and returned immediately and undetected to a house nearby where she had stayed as a guest the previous night, her hosts being unaware of her condition. On January 3 a dog was found on the beach with the body of an infant. This led to inquiries by the police and the accused admitted having left the infant among the rushes. She did not know whether it was dead or alive.

A medical witness expressed the opinion that the infant had breathed, death being due to exposure and lack of necessary attention.
