INTENSE SUFFERING IN GREECE

(Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, January 21. All accounts of the suffering through famine in Greece and the heroic resistance of the people are understated, according to an Athenian barrister who arrived at Beirut, says The Daily Telegraph’s correspondent. The Italians and Germans have one desire, the extermination of the Greek people, whom they detest. The Germans attribute the Russian setback to Greek resistance, whereby vital time was lost. Therefore, the Greek nation must pay by slow death. Household effects and foodstuffs are sent to Germany. Foodshops in the towns are empty, but villagers have concealed part of their crops. Underfed children in Athens and Salonika rake refuse in the hope of finding food. Emaciated women stand in queues for hours for most meagre rations. The stoical women bless the Royal Air Force pilots, despite the Greek victims of the raids.
