LEADER OF CHURCH OF ENGLAND

DR LANG TO RETIRE SOON

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, January 21. The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr Cosmo Lang) announced at the Convocation of Canterbury held in London today that he intended to retire at the end of March. Dr Lang said

that after the war there would be a great period of reconstruction for the Church as well as the State, and he thought it was his duty to hand over the reins of office to a younger man, who would be better able to prepare now to deal with the post-war problems.

Dr Lang, who is 77 years of age, entered the Church in 1890. Queen Victoria heard of his ability and appointed him as one of her chaplains.
