EMPIRE’S WAR EFFORT

PROBLEMS CALLING FOR SOLUTION

MR CHURCHILL’S TASK

(8.0.W.) _ RUGBY, January 19. The Empire’s relief and satisfaction at the safe return from the United States of Mr Churchill are voiced in all sections of the Press. The relief is not at his personal safety, but also because he has resumed control and will immediately set to work to unravel the various tangles which critics assert are complicating the war effort. While emphatic satisfaction is expressed with his accomplishments in the United States there is hopeful anticipation also that Mr Churchill will, in the near future, give Parliament and the public rather more detailed information on matters, which, for the time being, are felt to be somewhat obscure.

Not the least of the problems facing Mr Churchill is the desire for some form of Empire War Cabinet, which has become more

insistent because of Far Eastern

developments. The Times says: The main need is a policy embodying the assent of the Empire as a whole, with the Dominions participating continuously in determination, to the extent, and under the form of representation, that they desire. It should not be difficult to meet that need, and it may be taken for granted that Mr Churchill will have a solution to propose. Mr Churchill made his first public appearance since his return when he motored to Buckingham Palace today and reported to the King on his visit to the United States and Canada. Mr Churchill remained to lunch.
