OBITUARY

MRS C. M. JENKINS The death occurred suddenly in Wellington recently of Mrs Janet Jenkins. Born at Flaxbourne, Marlborough, 79 years ago. Mrs Jenkins was a daughter of Mr and Mrs William Gillespie, two of Blenheim’s best-known and most highly respected residents of the early days. Mrs Jenkins, too, was a cousin of the late Mr Rudyard Kipling and General Sir lan Hamilton. She was married in. 1884 and lived for the greater part of her life in Wellington, where she endeared herself to a large number of friends by her gentle and kindly nature. Her husband, Mr C. M. Jenkins, was at one time a noted amateur oarsman (he was a New Zealand champion) and was a prominent figure in the musical world as a cornetist and conductor, and in yachting circles. In addition to her husband, Mrs Jenkins leaves three sons, Mr W. M. Jenkins (town clerk of Gisborne), Mr P. Jenkins, and Mr C. H. Jenkins (the former Ne\' Zealand 100 and 220 yards sprint champion), of Wellington, and two daughters, Mrs H. J. Hunter, of Palmerston North and Mrs H. Bell, of Wellington. A brother of the late Mrs Jenkins is Captain J. M. Gillespie, of Wellington, who was at one time Resident Commissioner in Western Samoa, and Mrs F. W. Adams, of Blenheim, is a sister. Mr and Mrs Jenkins formerly lived in Invercargill, Mr Jenkins being on the staff of The Southland Times.
