HIGH STANDARD OF SWIMMING

CARNIVAL AT TEPID BATHS

CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS DECIDED

A high standard of swimming was a feature of the carnival held by the Southland Swimming Centre in the Tepid Baths last night. Twelve championship events were conducted, in addition to the handicap races, and although no records were broken some fast times were recorded. Many of the swimmers showed greatly improved form.

In the 75 yards junior boys’ backstroke championship, J. Macdonald took only one minute 1 1-5 seconds to cover the distance, being two seconds outside the Southland record. This boy’s times should show further improvement. V. Vial, in his first year as an intermediate, put up the very good time of Imin 20sec in the 100 yards open handicap. The Southland breaststroke record for this distance is Imin 16 4-ssec.

The most exciting of the championship races was the 50 yards junior girls’ backstroke in which Miss J. de la Perrelle and Miss P. Strang tied for first place, their time being 39 4-ssec—--2sec outside the record.

Another feature of the evening’s programme was the tinty tots’ races. These events are attracting larger entries at each succeeding carnival and there is no doubt about the enthusiasm of the young swimmers. Last night’s events, which were watched by a good crowd, were productive of many close finishes. The following abbreviations have been used in the results:—Murihiku Club (M.); Ex-Pupils (Ex-P.); Collegiate (C.). CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS Junior Boys’ 50 Yards Freestyle (4 entries): J.
