BEER STOLEN FROM SHIP
WATERSIDE WORKERS FINED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Nov. 24. When the motor-ship Hauturu was at New Plymouth on August 22 the mate about 6.30 p.m. saw two men leave the ship and enter a shed. They had suspicious bulges under their clothes, so the police were informed and Constable A. H. Canning found two bottles ’of beer in the shed. After keeping watch till work on the ship was finished for the night, the constable saw Frank Kelly and Ronald Neil Christensen, watersiders, enter the shed and begin searching. Each of them said he had a bottle there. On being accosted Christensen said he had gone into the shed to get a bicycle. The constable took charge of the beer. Senior Sergeant C. M. Anniss said in the Magistrate’s Court today that when the Hauturu arrived at Wanganui the next day it was found that three cartons had been emptied of their three dozen bottles. These two men were not the ringleaders, but further inquiries were being made and it was possible there would be other charges against men working on the wharf. Kelly and Christiansen admitted the theft. Each accused was fined £3 by Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M.
