DESIGNER OF BOULDER DAM

VISIT TO AUCKLAND (P.A.) AUCKLAND, November 24. A representative gathering of about 20 Auckland civil engineers employed by the Government and local bodies and in private practice entertained Dr J. L. Savage, designer of the Boulder and Grand Coulee dams and a world authority on this class of structure. Dr Savage, wh'b is chief designing engineer to the United States Bureau of Reclamation, is passing through Auckland on his way to advise upon public water storage projects in Australia. He will later go on to India for consultations about a major water conservation scheme there. “There are no more ‘super projects’ like Boulder and Grand Coulee in sight in America at present,” he said, “but many smaller works are going on all the time. It is impossible to see the end of water conservation work on American rivers or the rivers of the world.” Dr Savage mentioned that his bureau worked in friendly rivalry with the United States Army, whose engineers almost from the beginning had been responsible for the control of rivers and inland waterways over most of the Mississippi basin and eastern states. While in Australia Dr Savage will advise upon a scheme for augmenting the water supply of Melbourne and upon a hydro-electric project for the State Electricity Commission of Victoria.
