SCHOOLS TENNIS TITLES

Secondary Pupils’ Championships

Good progress was made in the secondary school tennis championships which were played at Invercargill on Saturday. Conditions were ideal and the standard of play was high. The final of the senior girls’ singles between Misses S. Downes and J. Telfer was well contested and although Miss Downes ran out the winner, 9-4, the margin between them was not as large as the score would indicate. Miss Downes’s forceful driving proved the deciding factor. In the final of the senior girls’ doubles Misses S. Mitchell and G. Hannon were too strong for their opponents, Misses C. Greenfield and E. Deaker, and had a comfortable win, 9-4. The semi-final of the mixed doubles between Snow and Miss Downes and P. Skelt and Miss S. Smith was one of the best games of the competition. The final between Rowley and Miss N. Macalister and Skelt and Miss Smith produced some excellent tennis. The first few games were evenly contested, but Rowley’s superior net play combined with Miss Macalister’s steadiness earned them a 9-4 victory. In five matches *played during the tournament this pair lost only nine games. The president of the Junior Lawn Tennis Association (Mr C. A. Stewart) presented the trophies to the winners of the singles championship.
