FIERCE DRIVE INTO CYRENAICA

AXIS TANKS SCATTERED PITCHED BATTLE WITH R.A.F. FIGHTERS (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 23. New Zealand forces have occupied Fort Capuzzo, just over the Egyptian-Libyan frontier and a few miles inland, according to agency messages from Cairo. An Associated Press correspondent has given a vivid account of that part of the battle in Libya, and has described the magnificent co-operation of the land and air forces. The action was one of the greatest pitched battles between tanks and aeroplanes that has ever been seen, he said. While the New Zealand troops drove towards shell-scarred Fort Capuzzo, hundreds of Royal Air Force fighters attacked a large concentration of German tanks further west, wrecking and crippling many, and scattering others. Hurricanes and Tomahawks roared over the tanks, while the enemy sent up an intense barrage of flak. Axis aircraft also made one of their rare appearances. It was a great victory for the Royal Air Force.
