PERSONAL

Although no official advice has been received, there is every possibility that the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall will visit Gore on their southern tour. The date tentatively suggested for the visit is December 11, and their Excellencies will probably arrive by car at 11 a.m., and depart at 4 p.m. Mr H. W. Smith, district road engineer, is acting in the capacity of district engineer of the Public Works Department in Invercargill in the absence of Mr W. G. Pearce, who is away on sick leave. Mr Smith has been away since Tuesday visiting the Homer Tunnel.

Sergeant W. J. Irwin, who has been stationed at Invercargill for the past 10 months, has received notice of his transfer- to Gore, where he will succeed Senior-Sergeant S. King, who has been transferred to Timaru on promotion. Sergeant Irwin will be succeeded in Invercargill by Sergeant H. Hogg, of Dunedin, who was stationed at Bluff at few years ago. Mr A. R. Smith, formerly postmaster at St. Albans, Christchurch, took up duty yesterday as supervisor of the postal branch at the Chief Post Office, Invercargill. He is replacing Mr .J. O’Brien, who was recently promoted to the position of senior supervisor of the postal branch at Invercargill.

Mr W. Sullivan, of Whakatane, was the only nominee when nominations closed last night for the National Party candidate in the Bay of Plenty by-elec-tion, made necessary by the death overseas of Lieutenant A. G. Hultquist. He will therefore become the official candidate. Mr Sullivan, who is 49, was beaten by 169 votes by Lieutenant Hultquist in the 1938 general election. Born in Taranaki, he came to the Bay of Plenty district in 1913 and is a member of a well-known contracting firm which has‘erected important buildings throughout the district. He was Mayor of Whakatane for 13 years.—Press Association.
