For- 36 years now Mr W. J. Walterhas represented the people of AvonNew Brighton on the Christchurch Drainage Board, a period of service which is considered to be a record for any local body in the four main centres in the Dominion. Length of service on local bodies is a habit with Mr Walter. He has been on the Waimairi County Council for 28 years, on the North Canterbury Hospital Board and the Lyttelton Harbour- Board for 24 years each, and on the Christchurch Tramway Board for 23 years and ahalf. For 30 years he has been on the Papanui Domain Board, of which he has been re-elected chairman afteroccupying that position for the last seven years. Longer still has been his connection with sport. He has been a cricketer for 42 years, associated with cycling for 40 years, and for 20 years he played senior Rugby.
