RUSSIANS HOLD KERCH

FIGHTING IN APPROACHES TO CITY (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 19. A claim that Kerch, the “gateway to the Caucasus,” is still in Russian hands has been made by M. Solomon Lozovsky, the Soviet spokesman. M. Lozovsky said that fighting was still going on in the approaches to Kerch. Fierce battles are also reported at Kalinin and Rostov, with the German thrusts held in each place. Trying to batter their way to the Caucasus, the Germans have launched another fierce attack against Rostov, but the Russian resistance has reached new heights of heroism. North of Moscow the Germans, despite repeated efforts, have failed to cross the Volga near Kalinin, and at other key points on the central sector, Mojaisk, Malo Yaroslavets and Tula, they have been held. There is bitter fighting near Leningrad, with the Russians claiming advances.

Moscow radio states that influenza has broken out among the German troops on the Eastern Front and has caused many deaths.
