BUSMEN STRIKE IN GLASGOW
DISPUTE OVER ROSTER SYSTEM NEARLY 500 DISMISSED (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Nov. 13. Nearly 500 Glasgow bus drivers and conductors were dismissed because they persisted in a strike over the duty rosters. Another 1000 employees of the Glascow City Council are striking in sympathy with the busmen. They will be dismissed unless they return to work. The Transport Ministry and the Service authorites have decided that Royal Air Force and Army service lorries will take over Glasgow’s transport unless the strikers return before midnight tonight. Only 70 per cent, of the 1500 busmen reported for work today. The strikers claim an increase of £2 7/- a week to £7/9/-, also better rostering. Glasgow’s transport is in a state of chaos. The trams were crammed far beyond the regulation loads. Lorries and cars helped, but armies of workers were forced to walk to work. Many on vital work were between two and three hours late.
Shop stewards from all the Clydeside shipyards marched in protest through Glasgow streets after a deputation had asked for an increase of 10/- a week for shipyard labourers. ’“lie deputation mentioned men receiving £2/3/- for three weeks’ work after income tax deductions.
