The Commissioner of Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) visited Invercargill yesterday morning and left later for Gore and Dunedin.

Mr J. Lindsay, chief postmaster at Invercargill, will leave on Monday on annual leave for about 10 days. Mr M. P. Anderson, chief clerk, will be acting chief postmaster in his absence.

Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., returned to Invercargill by the express last night from Wellington. Mr W. F. H. Stone, secretary of the Invercargill Returned Services Association, resumed duty yesterday after his annual leave.

Mr J. Cormack, senior supervisor of the telegraph branch of the Chief Post Office, Invercargill, began annual leave yesterday. He is being relieved by Mr G. D. J. Hughes. Mr B. L. Jackson, of the clerical staff of the Chief Post Office, will begin his annual leave today before proceeding to Levin to begin training as an airman pilot. Yesterday Mr Jackson was met by the clerical staff and the presentation of a cigarette case was made by the chief postmaster (Mr J. Lindsay). Mr Lindsay, on behalf of the staff, extended best wishes to Mr Jackson for a safe and speedy return. Messrs W. G. Nield and R. J. W. Blick endorsed Mr Lindsay’s remarks. The serious accident suffered by Mr James Cowie, of Balfour, was referred to by the chairman of the Gore SubExecutive of the Farmers’ Union (Mr Henry Smith) at a meeting of the subexecutive yesterday. A motion of sympathy was carried and it was agreed to write wishing Mr Cowie a speedy recovery to health.
