WINTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Winton Borough Council was held recently. The Mayor (Mr Neil Metzger) presided.

A letter was received from the Southland County Council stating that the engineer would make an inspection of the road to be formed to M. Deegan’s property at the northern boundary of the town. The Mayor said he had interviewed Cr W. M. Norman and it had been agreed to ask Mr Deegan if he would* plough the sides of the road. The Mayor said that complaints had been received about wandering stock in the town and he thought that the matter should be mentioned to the inspector. It was decided to carry out the Mayor’s suggestion.

A letter was received from the Hon. Adam Hamilton stating that he would be pleased to interview the Minister of Housing concerning the shortage of State houses in Winton. A number of replies were received from the various towns and boroughs in Southland in reply to a letter sent out by the Winton borough asking for support to a resolution to the Government to reduce the electricity charges to boroughs and towns. Four replies were received, three of which supported the resolution. As further acknowledgments have yet to be received, the matter was left over till next meeting.

During a discussion on borough reserves, the Mayor stated that the grass on Centennial Park needed mowing, and a general clean-up made. “They play cricket down there, but they have not asked for permission,” he said. “Are we going to mow it or are we going to use it for grazing?” Or Mcllwrick: I suggest that tenders be called for cutting the outside for hay. Even if it were done for nothing, it would be better for us.

The Mayor: Do you think it would pay us to put a mob of sheep on it? Cr Mcllwrick: It would be all right, but they would have to be put off about three weeks before any function was held there. SCHOOL FAIR A successful bring-and-buy carnival, in aid of the swimming and school funds, was held at Winton, when a profit of £B2/5/- was made. Various stalls and competitions did a good trade, while a pleasant interlude was a drill display by the children under Mr McMillan. After the evening’s activities, the head master, Mr W. J. Bennett, expressed the school’s thanks to the stallholders, helpers and the public. i The approximate cost of the swimming pool is £l4O, of which the Winton School has to find £7O. Of the net profit of £B2/5/- from the carnival, £4l/2/6 will go to the swimming fund, and with further donations, the total now stands at £6l/10/-, leaving a balance of £B/10/- to be secured. NATIONAL SAVINGS As part of the National Savings campaign each town in New Zealand has been allotted a weekly quota, which it is hoped the citizens of that district will strive to attain by purchasing National Savings bonds, or by paying into their National Savings account. To indicate the daily progress, a “moneyball” affixed to the local post office flag pole will be raised proportionately to the amount received and. when the “quota” is reached a flag will be flown for the rest of that week, the “moneyball” being dropped to the base of the pole. The quota allocated to Winton is £193 and this- amount being received last week a flag with N.S. shown in

large letters was flown from the post office flagpole. PERSONAL Before leaving Winton on transfer to the Timaru Post Office, Mr A. Hagerty was entertained by members of the local band. In making a presentation on behalf of the bandsmen, Mr J. Wilson stated that with their guest’s departure it would be the first time that the band would be without a Hagerty since its formation in the early days. BROWNS ATHLETIC SOCIETY There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Browns Athletic Society, Mr Robb being elected president. It was decided to hold the sports as usual, although no date was decided upon. After the meeting a smoke concert was held and items were given by Messrs Young, R. Hardy, W. Forde, W. Heads and A. Forde.
