NATIONAL SAVINGS
With a view to boosting up receipts for National Savings as well as retaining the Dominion leadership flag, the postmaster at Tuatapere, Mr E. L. Tyndall, has organized a committee composed of business men and representatives of various organizations. At present, a total of 646 National Savings accounts has been reached, 1 but it is hoped to increase this shortly. The weekly quota for Tuatapere has been fixed at £69 and for two weeks recently it has been exceeded. A money barometer is to be erected and the special flag to be flown whan the quota is reached is to be donated by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union.
HOME GUARD PARADE At the weekly parade of t%e Tuatapere Home Guard, Mr A. Mitchel, who is leaving for Timaru. this week, formally handed over command of B company to his successor, Mr H. C. McKenzie, Papatotara. Officers and n.c.o. s from the rest of B company, Papatotara, Te Tua and Te Wae Wae units, were also present, and the whole parade was instructed by Captatn Leith, adjutant of the Invercargill group, and Sergeant-Major Smart. The -company practised the correct fall-in >Rnd then both instructors gave demonstrations of the correct position for firing and instruction in the handling of rines. Captain Leith and Sergeaht-Major Smart are to instruct officers aitd n.c.o.’s of C company at Clifden on Tuesday and those of A company at Orepuki on Wednesday. Unfortunately, ?hey will not find opportunity to revisit the battalion for some time. PERSONAL Members of the Tuatapere Home Guard took the opportunity oh the last parade night to farewell Mr A Mitchell before his departure for Timaru. Major J. O. Harper, battalion commander, in making a presentation, spoki of Mr Mitchell’s ability first as a platoon commander and then as company commander. Since the Home Guard had been formed, he had taken a keen interest in its activities and his logss would be keenly noticed. He expressed congratulations to Mr Mitchell on his promotion in his work and tendered best wishes for a successful future. Other speakers were Messrs R. C. McKenzie (present company commander), S. J. Crawford and J. A. Forde (platoon commanders), W. Harrison (company sergeant-major) and P. Hamilton (the oldest member of the Home Guard). Mr Mitchell replied. Members of the Waiau A. & P. Association were also present and Mr J. A. Bennett, president, called upon Mr H. D. Norman to make a presentation to Mr Mitchell. Both speakers thanked Mr Mitchell for his assistance to the show since it had been first organized, as he had always been a willing worke.r, SUCCESSFUL SHOP DAY The Tuatapere branch of the Red Cross Society held another successful shop day recently, resulting in a sum of over £ll being raised towards its funds. Competitions were won by Messrs J. N. Brown (fruit) end H. Benneworth (ornaments).
