BOROUGH COUNCIL meeting A petition, signed by 83 employees of the Mataura Paper Mills, asking that the council rescind its previous motion that the street lights be cut off at 11.15 p.m. and that a reversion be made to the former time of 12.15 a.m., was received at a meeting .of the Mataura Borough Council. The question was fully discussed and the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) said that notice of motion would be necessary if the motion were to be rescinded. It was decided, to refer the matter to the Lighting Committee. The Mataura Ladies’ Cricket Club was granted the use of the playing area for the 1941-42 season, subject to arrangements being made with the men’s cricket clubs. The librarian (Mrs H. G. Walsh) reported that during the month the numbers pf books issued had been 1434 fiction and 537 non-fiction, a total of 1971. To date there had been 350 borrowers. TUTURAU RESERVE The advisability of expending money and employing the council staff for maintaining the assets of the Tuturau Maori Centennial Reserve was discussed. Some councillors supported the proposal and stated that the tracks and shrubs were deteriorating for want of attention and held that a greater amount than the proposed £l5 would be required. Other members of the council expressed the opinion that a greater need lay in the necessity of employing the staff in cleaning-up operations around the town itself. It was decided by five votes to four that the work be proceeded with. WOMEN’S CRICKET Satisfaction that the club was in a sound financial position was expressed by the chairman (Mr J. A. Craven), at the annual meeting of the Mataura Ladies’ Cricket Club. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of about £ll.

The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, Mr D. Baker; president, Mr I. Maslin; vice-presidents, Messrs A. Richmond, Clark, J. S. Corbet, and Mrs A. N. Mac Gibbon; secretary, Miss R. Barclay; coach, Mr J. Maley; club captain, Miss H. Maley; vice-captain, Miss C. Baker; auditor, Mr E. H. C. Perkins. Those present were elected to the committee. Opening day was arranged for November 15, and a decision was made to forward an invitation to Invercargill to send a team' up for. the occasion. It was decided that Mr J. A. Craven be elected a life member of the club. Kaye, who has left to take up the position of head master of the Waipiata school, was met by the staff of the Mataura school before his departure and presented with a travelling case. In making the presentation the head master, Dr W. J. Boraman, expressed regret at Mr Kaye’s departure and wished him the best of luck. A presentation o f a hanging mirror was also made to Mr Kaye by the pupils.
